Australia is currently a major climate polluter, with Australians producing an average of 19.8 tonnes of CO2 annually, compared to the global average of 5 tonnes. While government and corporate efforts to reverse this trend are commendable, they alone are insufficient, we all need to get involved, and quickly. That's where Mallee Collective comes in. Offering low-cost personal carbon offset plans as subscriptions, Mallee makes it easy for Australians to reduce their emissions. Our insight was simple: every day, individuals face choices that affect the planet, and it can feel like a constant balancing act to tell the good from the bad. This concept of balance informs the design. Dynamic visuals of objects both harmful and harmless create an energetic, playful world where typography and photography balance on top of each other and interfaces are subtly off-kilter. Motion plays a central role, with the identity constantly reconfiguring. Avoiding cliched green palettes, this approach captures attention without moral judgement. The experience was gamified through Green-up Promises; subscription discounts for behaviour changes like going car-free or eating plant-based. Achievement milestones unlock custom shareable badges, transforming carbon reduction into tangible, rewarding progress.
