For over a decade, the Australian government has detained refugees in offshore detention centres while blocking cameras and journalists from documenting it. Without visual evidence, what is happening there stays hidden and is easier for people to ignore. Exhibit A-i fills that gap. H+Co and social justice law firm Maurice Blackburn spent 300 hours interviewing refugees about their experiences in offshore detention and then worked with AI technicians, photojournalists and the survivors themselves to generate accurate visual evidence of what they endured. The result is 32 testimonies and over 130 images that give form to stories that were previously invisible. My role was designing the website, creating a space where these powerful images and statements could be experienced with the weight they deserve. The design needed to be direct and respectful, letting the evidence speak without getting in the way. The project was submitted to Australian Parliament, exhibited at the Immigration Museum in Melbourne, and integrated into Shutterstock alongside real photojournalism, reaching over 340 million people and generating serious conversations with policymakers about what's been happening offshore.
